New White Burgundy Releases from the 2009 Vintage

Glass of White Burgundy

The white Burgundy wines of 2009 represent yet another excellent vintage, albeit one meant for relatively early consumption. The summer was normal, for a change, with a beautiful month of August followed by a few days of threatening weather in mid-September, but the grapes ripened thoroughly without reaching excessively high levels of alcohol. Yields were relatively high. The wines are rich, flavorful and in general ready to drink now. They will age gracefully for a few years, but they lack the fresh acidity required for truly extended aging. In contrast, the 2008 vintage, which we reported on earlier, was a more troubled one but with the higher acidity that will give the best wines very long lives. Our tasting notes on the 2009's from Domaine des Malandes, Domaine J-L & F Chavy, Domaine Fougeray de Beauclair, Domaine Stephane Aladame, Patrice Cacheux, Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard, and Vallet Frères are given below. We previously reported on the 2009 Burgundies of Louis Jadot.
